The situation involves activist Arturo Gonzalez, who was allegedly detained with the involvement of California Highway Patrol during an ICE operation in San Diego, an encounter that was captured on video while Gonzalez was livestreaming.
The footage begins with Gonzalez following an ICE agent through his neighborhood in San Diego. While filming, he can be heard shouting at the agent and demanding that ICE stay away from his neighbors. Gonzalez, who has described himself as a community activist, appeared intent on documenting ICE activity and making it visible to the public. As the livestream continues, the situation escalates. Rather than leaving the area, ICE agents appear to call for backup.
Soon after, California Highway Patrol officers arrive on the scene. What initially looked like a confrontation between a civilian and ICE agents quickly turns into a coordinated response. Moments later, additional ICE vehicles are seen stopping nearby, surrounding Gonzalez as he remains on camera. For many viewers, the presence of Highway Patrol alongside ICE in San Diego raised immediate questions about coordination between agencies.
Gonzalez was not taken to jail, but the encounter did not end without consequences. According to Gonzalez, ICE agents later filed a police report accusing him of reckless driving. Despite the fact that the entire encounter was livestreamed and recorded, Highway Patrol officers reportedly impounded his vehicle for 30 days. Gonzalez said the impound could cost him around $3,000 in towing and storage fees.
Even after losing access to his car, Gonzalez stated that he had no intention of stopping his activism. He told supporters that he planned to continue monitoring ICE activity in San Diego, even if that meant riding a bicycle through his neighborhood to do so. For him, the incident only reinforced his belief that ICE operations need to be publicly documented.
Online reactions were sharply divided. Many viewers were stunned by how openly Highway Patrol appeared to side with ICE in San Diego.
