Oprah Winfrey has been a daytime staple for decades. But even after all these years, she still manages to shock. At 71, the media mogul reveals some personal changes in her life that are still turning heads. The TV icon reveals she has a dark side, or used to have one that not many people have seen, or even know about. Beneath her polished public persona lies a side of Oprah that she has kept hidden, that is, until recently.

In a recent interview promoting her latest book, Enough: Your Health, Your Weight and What It’s Like to Be Free, she disclosed details that would surprise even her most devoted fans. Radar Online reports that Oprah Winfrey spoke frankly about the challenges of managing food and alcohol cravings and how her approach to both has drastically changed for her over the years.
Before her most recent transformation, Oprah’s tolerance for alcohol was off the charts. She revealed that she once consumed a dangerous amount of booze. In fact, she downed 17 shots of tequila in a single evening, proving that she could outdrink almost anyone of her friends.
“They were saying ‘just put the bottle down’ because nobody understood that for some people, not everybody who drinks, overdrinks becomes an alcoholic, but if you carry the marker or the gene that allows alcoholism to flourish with you, you then develop alcoholism,” Winfrey explained.

This is also something she compares to the way certain people are predisposed to obesity. Even her longtime friend Gayle King confirms that Oprah’s claim wasn’t an exaggeration. She could, indeed, hold her own in a drinking contest.
The real game-changer came with the introduction of a GLP-1 medication, a prescription that helped Oprah Winfrey manage her weight. An added and unsuspected surprise/side effect it also eliminated her desire for alcohol.
“I haven’t had a drink in years. The fact that I no longer even have a desire for it is pretty amazing,” she said. Beyond curbing cravings for booze, the medication also quieted the obsessive with food.
Oprah Winfrey also states that her weight transformation isn’t just physical for her. It’s mental and emotional. She says she no longer blames herself for overindulging and has found a level of peace.
Her new life and outlook, from tequila-fueled nights to mindful, guilt-free living, make Oprah Winfrey’s life feel more authentic and joyful. She claims she has flipped the script on her life. She’s embracing the happy, confident life she has always wanted, and couldn’t ask for anything more.
