It’s always best to be alert on the streets, especially if you’re a pedestrian, because you never know what kind of crazy driver you might encounter. For example, this driver from Austin, Texas, decided that crosswalks are “underused” and drove their car directly onto the pedestrian walkway on the Interstate 35 bridge. This is probably the most creative attempt to avoid traffic this year.
The Redditor goodgreat123 shared this curious scene on r/Austin when passing by a bridge in the morning. According to OP, this driver ended up stuck on the pedestrian walkway on the I-35 bridge in Austin, Texas. Although the OP passed by so quickly, they noticed the driver’s maneuver left them so deep in the pedestrian lane that several pedestrians had no choice but to walk along the side of the road to get around their stuck vehicle. Also, although it does not appear in the image, OP added that there was a whole crew of cops and tow trucks working together to remove the vehicle.
Several Redditors believe that this entire traffic incident may have occurred because the driver took a wrong exit near Riverside, mistaking the pedestrian crossing for an “optional scenic view.” However, several others believe the real reason was that the pedestrian walkway’s barrier is very low, and anyone could lose sight of it until it was too late.
“I think it went up the ramp at the end of jersey barrier at the bottom of the picture and rode over it it up. It might have simply went down the pedestrian walkway all the way from Riverside. I see some damage, so I think it hit the end of the barrier,” said Snap_Grackle_Pop.
“This is one of those situations where you have to immediately confiscate the license, no questions asked. To simply ignore so many signs and instincts to be able to even attempt this requires such a low driving IQ that they are an inherent danger to everyone else on the road,” commented NetRealizableValue.
Among the comments, some said they were residents living near the area and that this intersection is problematic. This is because construction work and traffic chaos make it really difficult to tell which lanes are for cars and which are not. Regardless, Austin drivers are quite famous for having a “distinctive” driving style. If you live in Texas or plan to go there, it’s best to be very careful on the roads and take out insurance just in case.
