SpongeBob Squarepants has been one of the most popular cartoons ever made since being introduced to Nickelodeon in the late 90s. And while false rumors of its cancellation floated around the internet a few months ago, the contrary is actually true, as Paramount just revealed the next SpongeBob Squarepants movie.
Titled It’s a Wonderful Sponge, the movie will likely put its own spongy spin on the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life, with SpongeBob playing the role of Jimmy Stuart. This animated film will pick up after the evens of the 2015 film in the series Sponge Out of Water.
The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge will be the third installment in the series. Together, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and Sponge Out of Water raised $465.3 million for the franchise, all off an estimated cost of $104 million for production.
Paramount Pictures also announced during their panel CinemaCon at that sequel to A Quiet Place and “proper” sequel to Cloverfield were also in the work. Alongside that, they are working on two new animated films: Monster on the Hill and Luck.
Monster on the Hill follows a teenager named Winnie, who lives in a world where monsters are tame and the world of monster wrestling is a massive spectacle. Luck, on the other hand, is described as “A comedy that pulls back the curtain on the millennia-old battle between organizations of good luck and bad luck that secretly affects our daily lives.”
While there is no telling if these two flicks will succeed at the box office, I don’t think there is a doubt in anyone’s mind at Paramount that the next SpongeBob movie will be a hit.
The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge has a fixed release date fixed of July 22, 2020. The television show will also be returning for its twelfth season at some point in 2019.
