Washington, D.C. digital creator Coach Jackie took to the Supreme Court to ask those gathered at an anti-trans protest to name five female professional athletes. The creators approached the crowd, who waved signs declaring “protect women’s sports,” and found no one could answer the question. The first person Coach Jackie spoke with was a man who insisted he was protesting “so his daughters don’t have to play with men.” The next was a woman holding a sign reading, “Save women’s sports.” Her reason for being there was to “support women and women’s sports.”
Despite the sign, she seemed flustered at the question about women’s athletes. She did name “the Williams sisters who play tennis” after a moment’s thought. The D.C. digital creator commented that “Serena is retired, but okay.”
The first person the D.C. digital creator questioned answered “no.” Coach Jackie further questioned her by asking whether she watched women’s sports. Her answer was “no, I don’t watch any sports.” Another repeated this statement by saying she didn’t watch sports “very much.” As the D.C. creator and her colleague, Allie O’Brien, asked around, they received repetitive responses.
Another commented that “it’s not really about the professional athletes” when asked. This is a common thought, as a man earlier in the video stated that it was about “common sense.” Later in the video, the D.C. creator received the names of Nancy Hutchinson and Riley Gaines. The latter of which is not a professional athlete.
Comments on the video pointed out the hypocrisy, with one stating, “so IT’S NOT about the sports.” A second commentator agreed that, “they’re literally there for no reason.” A third added, “I love protecting women’s sports, I’ve never watched once in my life.”
D.C. Digital Creator Fires Back At Transphobe
A few days later, the D.C. digital creator followed up the video with another one stating that she was followed by a woman trying to goad her into arguing. Coach Jackie stated that she had asked the woman a question, and the woman later found her, asking to interview her in return. The questions were pushing her to define what a woman was and what a trans person was.
She explains that she silently moved to get to the other side of the rally, “the side without the transphobes.” The woman pursued the D.C. digital creator, already recording and asking, “Why won’t you argue with me?”
The D.C. creator explained that she wasn’t baited by the questions as she can’t discuss with someone about trans participation in sports “if [they] don’t believe transwomen exist.” The video does have a positive outcome, as Coach Jackie points out that many do want to have “good faith discussions” about the topic.
