Ohioans are venting raw anger after Tricia McLaughlin, a senior ICE communications official and wife of Republican ad strategist Ben Yoho, shared an Instagram image (now deleted) showing herself and friends flying on a private jet, surrounded by luxury shopping bags and designer luggage.
The photo appears to have struck a nerve across the state, particularly in the Columbus subreddit, where users tied the display of wealth to millions in taxpayer-funded ICE advertising contracts linked to Yoho’s political consulting work.
“This is what stealing huge amounts of taxpayer money looks like,” one Reddit user wrote. Another was even more scathing, accusing the group of “flaunting their greed, corruption and fraud” rather than trying to hide it.
The outrage isn’t just about optics. Critics argue the image reinforces concerns that politically connected operatives are profiting handsomely from immigration enforcement budgets while ordinary Ohioans struggle with rising costs of living. Several commenters pointed directly to the designer bags visible in the photo as symbols of excess.
“That’s mine,” one user said sarcastically, pointing to a luxury bag. “I paid for it and I want it back.”
Others focused on the broader moral contrast. One of the most upvoted comments accused ICE leadership and its allies of enriching themselves amid deadly enforcement practices, writing: “They’re killing people so these people can have a purse the size of a suitcase.”
The private jet itself became a point of ridicule rather than envy. Far from glamorous, many Ohio users described the image as “Tacky as hell – loud, gaudy, and desperately trying to signal wealth without understanding taste.”
The backlash lands amid growing scrutiny of ICE’s advertising spending and the close personal and political relationships between McLaughlin, Yoho, and senior figures in the Trump-aligned immigration apparatus. For critics in Ohio, the Instagram image was perceived as confirmation of everything they already feared. “Not even hiding it,” one said. Indeed.
