Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be reunited in about two years time. On Wednesday, Sony announced that Bad Boys for Life will premiere on Jan 17, 2020. The film will be directed by Adil El Arbi (Black) and Bilall Fallah (Black). This is all of the new information available regarding the project. The project has been in development for years, now. The latest draft of the script was penned by Chris Bremner, who currently has very little in his filmography. This is a massive project to place on a newcomer. But it’s also a strategy that seems hot, right now, in Hollywood. The DCEU, especially, picks up relatively unknown talent for many of its films. This includes the major success of Wonder Woman, as well as future projects such as Batgirl.
The Hashtag Show revealed the working plot of the film:
Marcus Burnett is working as a private eye after a falling out with Smith’s Mike Lowery, who is going through a midlife crisis as a bachelor who finally wants to mature, all while dealing with a new a young and cocky partner who is loyal to Lowery but that loyalty is not reciprocated, and finds bond with Burnett when he returns to the fray.
Lowery and Burnett are brought together again when a lean, mean, skilled, Albanian mercenary with a vendetta puts a death order on Lowery and Burnett for the death of his brother. Now the two must work together once again to bring him down. The film’s budget is set at over $100 million so expect loads of car chases and explosions.
This is a fairly stock revenge plot. But the Bad Boys films aren’t known for taking themselves especially seriously. The previous two films were released in 1995 and 2003, respectively, and directed by Michael Bay (Transformers: The Last Knight). While Bay won’t be returning to the director’s chair for this outing, Jerry Bruckheimer (Bad Boys, Bad Boys II) is back on board.
