Multiculturalism is one of the best parts about living in the U.S. Our country was always supposed to be a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. Unfortunately, not everybody feels this way. An Oregon woman filmed herself eating in a Mexican restaurant with her partner and has a very important message. She believes that, if you voted for Trump, you shouldn’t be sitting and enjoying Mexican food that her people made.
Johana (@jomadrigal1) makes a great point when she says, “To be silent is to be complicit.” She recently recorded herself eating at a Mexican restaurant in Portland, Oregon, where she lives with her partner. In the video, she states that she and her partner were enjoying their food at the restaurant but doing so while being “surrounded by white people.” This made her wonder just how many of these people were sitting there and eating Mexican food even though they voted for President Trump.
As Johana says, they “STILL have the audacity to go enjoy our food.” So why is enjoying food at a Mexican restaurant as a white person seen as hypocritical to Johana? Well, you can take a look at recent statistics in Oregon alone for your answer. At least 1,100 individuals were arrested in 2025 by ICE federal immigration agents. Trump himself stated that he would be coming “after” states like Oregon. Oregon is one of the states that has laws that prevent law enforcement from coordinating with ICE, by the way. In the first ten months of 2025, it was reported that well over 600 people were arrested by ICE agents.
It also pays to note that Latino people are the most targeted group by ICE officials in the U.S. So, as Johana presumes, people who voted for Trump also voted for more Hispanic people to be detained and possibly deported from our country. Yet they’ll still enjoy the food prepared with love by her people. It’s definitely a reason to be angry. And Johana adds in her video that she’s tired of seeing people say “I don’t do politics” or “I didn’t even vote.” You need to care. She says, “We can’t afford to stay silent” and she’s not wrong in the least.
One commenter added, “I’m a white girl who loves Mexican food, the people and your culture. I always wonder if they know I’m on their side when I’m there. No one deserves to be treated like this.” Another person stated, “Lately, it’s been feeling weird being out in public and not knowing if you’re walking by someone who agrees with what’s going on right now.”
