California Woman Feels ‘Betrayed’ After Childfree Friends Have Kids: ‘It’s Not That Deep, Sorry’

Kids? I’m out.

A woman in Los Angeles, California, took to the internet to share the ultimate betrayal: childless friends having kids, breaking promises while doing it. And while comically delivered, her argument sparked debate, many feeling the treachery themselves.

Despite feeling shame for posting it, Julia Austin shared her point of view on TikTok, feeling sure that many would share her opinion on the matter. She spoke about the supposed vow childfree friends make to each other regarding having no kids, leading to plans being made and lifelong promises of being there for each other, with no babies.

“You kinda made plans around it. You have expectations around it,” the California woman explained, mentioning trips and vacations exclusive to those with no children. However, things change, and friends who promised a lifetime of childlessness have kids. Julia, knowing full well that it may sound petty, said that such an incident is nothing short of betrayal.

She argued, “Finding friends who are aligned with you and have the same vision for the future is so hard. […] And when they flip the script, you feel like someone broke a promise to you.”

Childfree Debate, Reactions

In the hopes of not feeling like a social pariah, given her stance that might attract haters, the California woman hoped to find people who feel the same way online. Fortunately for her, she did.

“Agreed. I only have one friend who is adamantly child-free, and if she changed her mind, I’d be happy for her but sad for me,” one user said. Another netizen commented, “Never take anyone’s word, regardless of closeness. Sometimes people do change their minds. Your feelings are valid.” A third added, “You are definitely not alone.”

Others, however, were not too keen about her feelings of betrayal, arguing that having children should not evoke that emotional response.

“It’s not that deep, sorry. I’m childfree and I wouldn’t care if my friends suddenly changed their minds or vice versa,” one person said.

Regardless of how one might feel about the potential changes stemming from being a parent, the ones actually raising the child are who struggle the most. So, childfree or not, one should always be there for them, even if they cancel plans from time to time.
