Going through a divorce is no walk in the park, as many parents discover. Many claim the court system can be especially biased towards men when children are involved. As an example, one stay-at-home mother in Florida is going through a tough divorce. But she noticed something that’s having a massive effect on her divorce. Because of her husband’s lawyer, she may now miss out on having a normal income after divorce and fears it’ll lead to financial struggle.
TikToker Cortneygetsfit, Cortney, shared a video captioned with a bold but true statement,, “Stay-at-home moms get punished in divorce.” It’s pretty common for mothers raising their children to feel like they aren’t contributing enough. Having parents that are there when you need them is obviously important and necessary. Have you seen the cost of daycare? But as Cortney says, she’s being punished for being a stay-at-home mom and it might even affect her ability to get child support.
Cortney says she’s been a stay-at-home mom for seven years. That means she hasn’t had a traditional job, so no income, due to raising her kids. Now, she says in the midst of her divorce, her ex-husband and his lawyer asked the judge to “impute” Cortney’s income. In other words, they’ll pretend she’s been working and bringing in an income.
Why is he doing this? Cortney says in total shock he’s doing this “so that his child support can be lower.” What a model parent. It’s a really disturbing example of how somebody can twist reality in the midst of a divorce. How can somebody get away with lying?
Because Cortney doesn’t actually have an income, she’s been struggling with a lot of aspects of the court system. One commenter suggested, “A good lawyer will never let that slide” but, in the comments, she voices concerns about how she can’t afford it.
It appears that her ex-husband wants to have the upper hand over her.
Cortney makes a good point when she says, “I should’ve been paid this whole time as a stay-at-home mom” and she’s right. Choosing to have kids is a personal choice, sure, but you’re still raising the next generation of sanitation workers, doctors, athletes, artists. If people get paid for raising kids in the adoption system, why can’t stay-at-home parents get paid, too?
