Toxic California Neighbor Litters Man’s Yard for Giving Out Free Furniture, ‘Point of the Story: People Suck’

This is why we can’t have things

Sometimes, given how bold and brash bad actors behave, it can be easy to think the world is full of bad people. Which it is, but there are obviously plenty of good people out there, too. One unfortunate California man, however, came to the conclusion of the former when one of his neighbors littered his yard after he left out free chairs on the sidewalk. Posting his frustration to r/mildlyinfuriating, he expressed that he’d like to believe “that people are generally inherently good.” But he quickly concluded the opposite after someone crumpled up his “free” sign and threw it back to his house after taking the chairs.

“People who litter suck,” he remarked, annoyed. “People who take free [expletive] and then litter really suck.” Though, one witty Redditor commented on the real reason why the litterer did what they did with the sign: “The sign didn’t say ‘free sign’, so they left it.” “That’s the thing though,” OP chuckled back. “The sign was free but the stole my chairs and left the sign.”

Jokes and sarcasm aside, clearly, it’s not about throwing a piece of paper into someone’s yard that is just inconsiderate. It’s that, and the fact that someone from the neighborhood took advantage of the goodwill and free furniture offered by the man by crumpling the sign and then chucking it into the yard from the sidewalk. It’s just utter disrespect at that point. However, this unfortunate chair giveaway isn’t the only story involving excessively entitled or toxic individuals getting freebies.

“I gave a few dozen plastic tubs away once. You know, those kinds you put arts and crafts in,” began one commenter, sharing their tale. They continued, recalling how a mom on Facebook failed to show three times after saying she wanted them for homeschooling. Finally, when she came to take them, she said the drive was too long and requested gas money for the trip. “Point of the story: people suck,” the commenter concluded.

Another Redditor chimed in, saying how they left out completely unbroken and working furniture, clothes, and other miscellaneous household items for free in their yard. When someone pulled up to take the things, however, they drove onto the lawn, leaving tire marks. They even broke a table and a lamp while rummaging through everything.

In short, what this Californian and many others like him learned is that just because you give out free items or offer to be nice, it doesn’t mean people will treat you with respect in return. ‘Tis the sad way of the world.
