‘I Don’t Believe Freedom of Speech Has a Volume Limit’: Tennessee Man Attacked for Saying He Feels ‘Safer With Undocumented Immigrants’ Than ICE Agents

Hard truth

The concept of freedom of speech is often celebrated by many until the words begin to challenge one’s comfort or authority. A Tennessee man discovered the literal boundaries to his rights when he stood to express his feelings about the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in his community and was immediately surrounded by sheriffs.

In a video posted on X, a passionate man could be seen standing at the podium, sharing his convictions at the top of his voice. “I feel much safer with undocumented immigrants than I ever will with ICE agents,” he bellowed. The man’s words were met with immediate cheers and applause from the other citizens in the hall, signalling approval. As the man was speaking, two officers of the Sheriff’s department approached him from either side.

Despite the officer’s proximity, the Tennessee citizen was not intimidated. He did not cower but spoke even louder. “They are NOT welcome in my community!” he screamed, addressing the rumors of an ICE detention centre. “An ICE detention center will be a stain on Wilson County, and a stain on the soul of anyone who doesn’t do anything they can to stop it from happening,” he managed to get out as the officers urged him to step away from the stand, saying, “That’s enough.”

The audience appeared pleased by what the man said, as they kept cheering even after he stopped speaking.

“What’s with the intimidation by the sheriffs?” one user wrote in the comments. “I don’t believe freedom of speech has a volume limit,” they added. “Free speech in MAGA states is only for racial slurs and expressing how much you agree with Trump. Everything else is criminal,” a user responded. “Why are the deputies approaching him? He has the right to free speech,” one netizen stated. “Kind of proves his point as they reacted with pressure and proximity intimidation,” another pointed out.

“Not a freakout, righteous indignation. [expletive] ICE,” a user wrote. “Of course, the popo can’t have people talking mean about ICE in loud voices. Must descend and intimidate,” one netizen said sarcastically. Another one echoed their sentiment, filled with sarcasm, “Ah, yes. Government officers standing by, at the ready to force someone to be quiet when they begin to criticize the government. Just as the founding fathers intended.”

One netizen wrote, “Now the cult doesn’t like free speech, lol.” Another X user asked, “Why do these police always get involved when a citizen makes the board members’ feelings hurt?”
