With the rise of AI, more and more data centers are being built around the globe. And while some people may think that this does not concern them at all, it absolutely does. Data centers require a massive amount of energy and resources to operate, sometimes to the point of harming the environment. Those who live near these data centers also find their bills increasing significantly, as they are forced to shoulder part of the cost of running these facilities. One farmer from Pennsylvania was given the opportunity to sell his farmland for $15 million so it could be turned into a data center.

Most people might quickly accept such an offer. That amount of money is enormous, after all. But not this Pennsylvania farmer. Mervin Raudabaugh rejected the offer and instead sold the development rights to his 261 acres of land for just under $1.9 million. His decision was met with cheers from various Americans, as many did not want more data centers to be built. The Pennsylvania farmer said that this experience showed him that many people still cared about American farmers. Raudabaugh also spoke at length about the struggles many farmers are facing in America and how bleak the current situation feels.

The internet praised the Pennsylvania farmer for his decision to protect his farm and not allow a data center to be built on his land. “We need more people like this. Greed and profit chasing got us to where we are today,” one user said.

Some users wondered how long this would last, as some argued that the Pennsylvania farmer’s successor would likely sell the farmland in the future. Others rejected this claim, saying that it is unlikely to happen. “He sold the development rights to a nonprofit land trust. He still owns the land and can sell it down the line if he wishes, but whoever buys it can’t develop it, only keep it as farm/farmland. This guy is a gem,” one user said.

A handful of users, however, had some criticism toward the Pennsylvania farmer, especially regarding his complaints about farm laws in the state. “I respect this guy for his integrity, but he lost me when he started complaining about the effects of the inheritance tax on farms. In PA, there is a specific exemption for farms in the inheritance tax rules,” one Redditor wrote.

Another commenter said, “The guy believes Mexico and Canada will replace our food supply and not the greedy corporations and administration that are hurting average farmers, most of whom voted for the people now making policies that negatively affect them. JD Vance is making money with his AcreTrader involvement because of small farmer bankruptcies due to them not being able to sell their crops thanks to the tariffs.”
