‘Leave Our Taxes Out Of It’: Furious New Yorkers Take To The Streets Urging Mayor Mamdani To Do His Job

Will the cries of residents be heard?

Sometimes, it seems like politicians forget that citizens actually listen to the promises they make when campaigning for votes. Democrats in New York took to the streets to remind their Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, that they heard everything he said, and it was time for him to act on his words.

A video posted on X showed the protesters as they made their stance known. “…And every campaign speech, and every debate that you engaged in, we opened our ears to listen. Now, today, accept the words echoing from us now; do your job as Mayor, and leave our taxes out of it!” one of the homeowners bellowed. A second protester said, “You’re saying, ‘If we don’t tax the rich, then I got to increase property taxes.’ … We are not part of your negotiation tactics.”

Some netizens agreed that increasing taxes on the middle class was inconsiderate. “Taxes keep going up, while money keeps flowing elsewhere. The people who carry the load never seem to see where it actually goes,” one netizen wrote in the comments. “You cannot tax a struggling middle class into being rich. All this does is push hardworking families out of the city for good,” another added. “Raising taxes on the middle class is just the city’s way of saying ‘we value your contribution,’ and by contribution, I mean your money,” one user wrote sarcastically. “When the middle class starts shouting about taxes, it is usually a sign that the political honeymoon is already over,” a netizen noted.

Some users were not surprised by the turn of events. Some even believed that it was a repercussion for voting for the mayor in the first place. “Didn’t even take 2 months for buyer’s remorse to set in,” someone joked. “They chanted ‘Leave our taxes alone’ louder than they chanted for Mamdani two years ago. Elections really do have consequences,” one user said. Some users claimed that the mayor was only delivering exactly what he had promised. “How did they not know this is how it was going to go. He literally told them this is what he would do,” one noted.  “They literally never learn. ‘Tax the rich’ always turns into ‘tax everyone,’ because Democrats literally can’t trim a budget to save their lives,” another added.

“Democrats are finally realizing socialism means YOU pay the bill, not just ‘the rich’. You voted for it, New York. Enjoy the ‘affordability’ you were promised,” one netizen gloated.  “The near future in New York City is really going to be something to behold,” a last user noted.
