Where do you find the time?

The cost of living in the U.S. feels crazy high right now. Regular people are being strangled out of just trying to enjoy the lives they work so hard for. You probably know at least one or two people working two or more jobs. One woman in Mississippi just learned she was being evicted. If she can work multiple jobs and still not afford to live in one of the poorest states in the U.S., what does that say for others?

“I don’t want to be alive anymore,” Simone (TikTok/himynamessimone_) says in her TikTok video. She quickly clarifies that yes, she understands it’s a “heavy” sentence, but also that this isn’t her sharing suicidal thoughts. Instead, she explains it as an understanding that just being alive in the U.S. is “expensive.” She wonders how anyone can be alive in that vicious cycle.

I’m not trying to alarm anyone, but I would be lying if I said I was not tired. I am. I literally go to work and go home every single day. I do not have the time or energy to go out and spend money that I do not have. I work like a dog and still I get to lose the safest and most stable home I’ve ever had, and somehow I am expected to want to live. Or find some joy in being alive. I am exhausted beyond belief and so defeated that the work I put in every single day is futile, and I do ask God to what end is the means of working myself to exhaustion if not even my necessities are guaranteed. I feel like a failure for not even being able to pay my bills and a fool for hoping for a miracle. And at the end of this is just someone who really wishes to have some time off and away. | #work #genz #professional #rent #working

To drive the point home, she holds up a red eviction notice. Simone reveals she’d already been having a “breakdown” all week, so the eviction notice was just another problem. Already, she was heading into her “busiest” weeks for work. “I go to two out of my three jobs this weekend,” Simone says in her TikTok video, then explains her schedule. She’ll get some sleep, but that’s after working a shift, and when she’s awake for her second job, she’ll have to head straight into her third.

What this has resulted in is Simone feeling burned out. “I hardly want to go because it’s so clear I can’t even obviously cover my [expletive] necessities.” Simone reads the amount she owes in rent: $1918.80, within a few days, and according to Simone, that would “take a miracle” to make happen.

To make matters worse, Simone doesn’t get any benefits—not even PTO—despite working three jobs. “I just show up because otherwise if I don’t, then I make nothing,” Simone says. What troubles her most is that it doesn’t seem right that she can’t afford to live, even with three jobs under her belt.

And what she finds frustrating is that telling her landlord the “system” is making it harder for her isn’t a viable option. “They don’t give a [expletive] about that,” Simone says. With a huff, she ends her video, figuring she might as well go to work.

How People Reacted to Simone’s Disgust Towards the Cost of Living

Numerous commenters on Simone’s TikTok video shared just as much disdain for her predicament as their own. It’s very clear she isn’t the only one feeling this way about their 9-to-5. One commenter wrote in solidarity, saying, “A lot of us are feeling like this, I’m sorry girly.”

Another person wrote, “Something has to give. Cost of living is astronomical. Working 3 jobs and still being in a financial survival mode is sickening.”

Others wrote similar experiences, such as one stating their “whole paycheck” is for rent, while one said, “I’m tired of needing miracles just to survive here too.”

One person offered a suggestion. Since the notice was just that, a notice, Simone would still “have a hearing,” and if she could prove she’s struggling, she might get leeway. She not only should, but these shouldn’t be a problem to begin with.
