In a recent video, Mark Ruffalo voiced his criticism of American Israel Public Affairs Committee while expressing support for Illinois congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh.
In the clip, Ruffalo described AIPAC as a foreign lobbying group and accused it of buying influence over American politicians and attempting to shape U.S. policy. He encouraged his followers to support Abughazaleh, saying he believes she would represent the interests of American citizens.
Ruffalo also continued criticizing AIPAC, claiming that the organization has played a role in drawing the United States into foreign conflicts and arguing that it does not prioritize the well-being of American citizens.
The video appears to stem from recent accusations that a smear campaign had been launched against Illinois candidate Kat Abughazaleh. Abughazaleh has addressed the issue herself, claiming she was targeted by the campaign for several months. She said that “dark money” was being offered to influencers to post negative content about her.
According to Abughazaleh, the alleged campaign did not focus on her policies or political work, but instead targeted her identity, her family, and her friends. She also suggested the attacks may have intensified after polls showed her tied for first place. She specifically accused the group Democracy Unmuted of being behind the campaign.
One influencer who said she was approached was Florida content creator Amanda Informed. She claimed she received an email offering $1,500 if she posted a negative message about Abughazaleh.
As for why Mark Ruffalo mentioned the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in his criticism, the exact funders behind Democracy Unmuted are not publicly disclosed.
The race has also attracted significant outside spending. Reports indicate that AIPAC-backed political action committees have invested millions of dollars in the race, while Democracy Unmuted appears to operate as a smaller digital effort focused more directly on criticizing Abughazaleh.
Many internet users expressed anger over the situation involving Illinois candidate Kat Abughazaleh. Even members of the Illinois subreddit criticized what they viewed as attempts by certain organizations to influence the election. Some users also praised Mark Ruffalo for speaking out and using his platform to highlight the issue. “Mark is genuinely the GOAT. He’s done a lot of anti-fracking activism over here in the UK too,” one user wrote.
At the same time, not everyone was convinced by the claims. Some commenters were skeptical and suggested the situation might be part of normal political campaigning. “Smear campaign? That’s just campaigning. Besides, she’s smearing all her opponents too. Pretty hypocritical,” one Redditor commented.
