Pregnancy and childbirth should be a time when couples feel closer than ever. However, this isn’t always the case, not even with couples who are together waiting for their baby. A nurse in San Diego, California, recounts all the times husbands have acted in highly questionable ways when their partners needed their support during labor. According to this nurse, these attitudes from partners—specifically men—have made her cringe on more than one occasion.
It all started as a video response to another nurse, who asked if working in labor and delivery made her hate men. To which Nurse Kim, from San Diego, California, replied that there are many things the husbands do during their partners’ labor that give her the ick. Not only that, but Kim listed the five types of men she finds most annoying to see during her shifts. Among them, she criticized fathers who are more concerned with playing video games or taking calls when their wives need them, but who end up getting in the way of the entire process. Other partners treated the hospital staff as if they were in a hotel, asking for water or food for themselves rather than for their wives.
As if that weren’t enough, Nurse Kin returned with a second installment of this series. In the second video, in addition to saying she still had plenty of material for more videos, she also compiled another “Top 5” list of unpleasant men and husbands during childbirth. However, this list includes the worst candidates. For example, a spineless man who also advocates for his mother, the dreaded MIL, to be present at her grandchild’s birth, ignoring whether the mother is ok with that or not. The nurse also added the husband, who refuses to get a vasectomy, so his wife can have a major surgery to stop having children, as well as the husband seeking an “extra stitch”, if you know you know.

It’s obvious that not everyone—or men—acts the same in a situation that, while beautiful, is complicated, especially for the mother. Yet, any of the men in these top examples should have shown more empathy and care for their wives, partners, and newborn children. It’s a crucial moment, and things can go wrong in a matter of seconds. Childbirth is a miracle, but it takes a toll on the mother’s body, so the least we can do is make sure they’re comfortable and relaxed.
