The Democratic Party chair of Hernando County, Florida, Brian Stewart, was recently arrested after allegedly assaulting a disabled military veteran counter-protester at a “No Kings” rally. The alleged act of violence drew angry reactions online, with many people arguing that his actions were indefensible.
The incident reportedly occurred during a weekend “No Kings” protest in Spring Hill, Hernando County. The story quickly gained traction online, with right-wing media profiles such as Libs of TikTok helping it spread quickly among Republican audiences.
Reports indicate that Stewart was arrested on battery charges and released a couple of hours later after posting a $1,000 bond. Not much information about the alleged victim, a disabled military veteran, has been shared publicly, as the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has not released official details.
Stewart’s arrest sparked a reaction from local Republicans. Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power wrote a statement, saying, “Violence and political intimidation have no place in our state, and Floridians deserve better than mere silence from Democrat leadership. Nikki Fried must immediately remove Brian Stewart from his position of leadership.”
Internet Criticizes Florida Democratic Party Chair Brian Stewart
The alleged crime committed by the local Florida Democratic Party chair also angered users online. One person claimed that he was “a bully, full stop!! Even worse, the person he assaulted was elderly.” Others described the situation as “completely unacceptable. No one, regardless of politics, should be assaulted, especially a disabled veteran.”
Many people also blamed the Democratic Party for its broader stance. “Democrats position themselves as the party of tolerance and nonviolence. Their own local leader turned to physical attack when faced with disagreement from someone vulnerable,” one user wrote. Another angry commenter claimed, “The left has nothing but hate and violence.”
Others seemed appalled at how easily violence can start in these situations: “Many protestors have thought it to be their right to attack others, law enforcement, block them, get in their face, throw objects, spit, and damage their vehicles. It’s like spoiled little kids throwing a tantrum.”
These comments show how heated opinions can become when political violence occurs. At the time of this report, it is still unclear whether Brian Stewart will face any additional sanctions from his party over the incident.
