The long-dreaded snack smackdown has officially arrived in Texas, and the reaction from the public is nothing short of explosive. As of April 1, 2026, over 3 million Texans found themselves standing at checkout counters only to have their Lone Star Cards declined for items as simple as a bottle of Pepsi, a pack of gum, or a much-needed energy drink.

What to know about Texas SNAP benefit changes taking effect April 1

In a thread shared on Reddit by Silent-Resort03976, an argument took place in which some argued against the SNAP ban, while many vehemently opposed the government law overreaching and taking away so many options for those using benefits. A lot of back-and-forth ensued, and misinformation was rampant, but here is exactly what is banned and what is allowed under the new SNAP restrictions in effect in Texas, right from their website.

SNAP Food Benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps people buy the food they need for good health. People can buy:

  • Fruits, vegetables, garden seeds, and plants that produce food.
  • Milk, milk substitutes and other dairy products.
  • Bread and cereal.
  • Meat, fish and poultry.

SNAP food benefits are put on a Lone Star Card and can be used like a debit card at any store that accepts SNAP.

SNAP can’t be used to buy:

  • Tobacco.
  • Alcohol.
  • Non-food items.
  • Vitamins and medicines.

Effective April 1, 2026, SNAP recipients will not be allowed to use SNAP benefits to purchase:

  • Candy, such as:
    • Candy bars.
    • Gum.
    • Taffy.
    • Nuts, raisins or fruits that have been candied, crystalized, glazed or coated with chocolate, yogurt or caramel.
  • Sweetened drinks, including nonalcoholic beverages made with water that contain 5 grams or more of added sugar or any amount of artificial sweetener.

Items that can be purchased include beverages that:

  • Contain milk or milk products like soy, rice or similar milk substitutes.
  • Have more than 50% vegetable or fruit juice by volume.

These restrictions, as said before, created a firestorm of hatred going both ways, Republican and Democrat both, and here is just a small slice of what was being said in favor of the new ban and firmly against it.

“You’re right they’re not being stopped from consuming junk food so it has actually no purpose whatsoever it’s just about scolding and stigmatizing poor people. You’re basically making my point for me. There is no point to this policy. It accomplishes absolutely nothing.”

“Oh no, you can’t waste tax dollars on garbage”

“And, though I despise Trump supporters, we know that enough of them use SNAP. And though I could never wish harm on someone or their children, THIS is one time I will revel in the fact that those MAGA will be just as upset, and hopefully, but not guaranteed, some of them will change who they vote for during the midterms in November!”

Texas, although a majority Conservative state, still has many folks who use SNAP benefits in addition to Democrats, so the sides are very mixed on this issue. One thing is for certain: the anger is palpable and likely won’t end anytime soon.
