A video of a bookseller and her customer in Chicago, Illinois is making its rounds on social media, wherein the employee accuses the customer of being racist. It then escalates into a shouting match between the two, which the employee recorded and posted to her personal TikTok account.
Posted by TikTok user, Kesh.reads (Keshé), the employee and the one recording, shows Keshé and her customer in the middle of an argument. Keshé demands the customer, a white woman, repeat what she said about “Black people from the hood.” The customer is on the phone at the time and can be heard mumbling and calls Keshé a “psycho.” She also reveals some of her family lives in the area, but does not deny what she was accused of.
Keshé once again asks the customer to repeat what she said, to which she argues the west side of Chicago is considered “the hood.” The argument devolves further with both Keshé and the customer calling each other “racist” and mocking one another. The customer tells Keshé she has “serious anger issues,” but she brushes it aside and tells the customer to get out of the store.
In a follow-up video, Keshé adds a little more context to her experience, specifically with the book store. She no longer works at Open Books, due to the store closing its doors in March (as reported by Block Club Chicago). She reveals the only reason she was able to post the video at all was because she didn’t sign an NDA.
How People Are Reacting to Keshé’s Experience With Her Customer
Taking the video at face value, people on social media were up in arms, and quite disgusted that someone would have the audacity to be racist. Many viewers flooded Keshé’s TikTok video with support and words of encouragement.
One commenter focused on what Keshé said to the customer and condoned her reaction, saying, “Yesss sis! You ate this up!!!” Another wrote, “What a beautiful video. I’m so proud of you.”
Other viewers wanted to share their support by giving Keshé business. “Can we order online?” one viewer wrote, while another said “Girl, drop the link. I wanna buy a book.” Unfortunately, their orders will never be fulfilled.
Some commenters shared their distaste for the customer by sharing reaction memes.
