In Oklahoma, a woman is suing her neighbors after they felled 20 trees and bushes on her property. The reason? Her neighbors wanted to build a “friendly fence.” The aftermath was then posted on TikTok, where it has garnered over half a million Likes, along with thousands of bookmarks and comments.
TikTok user Skootergorl (Lillie) shares in her video the extent of the damage. “I’m suing my neighbors because they cut down twenty trees and bushes from my property,” Lillie says. In their place, her neighbor had erected an incredibly ugly “friendly fence.” You can see that many of the planks are of varying lengths, resulting in noticeable gaps. “It’s kinda comical,” Lillie says, though not as comical as the tree stump the neighbors built over rather than remove entirely.
One tree stump that Lillie says made her “extremely sad” she estimated was three decades old, based on its rings. Other noticeable mishaps were roots cut from Lillie’s property and, strangely, the ends of the fence looked completely normal. Lillie argues the neighbors made the fence “ugly” on purpose because, strangely, the ends of the fence look normal.
Lillie then shows a before image of a healthy wall of bushes and tall trees. According to her, it’s actually one of the reasons she wanted the property in the first place. “And they tore it all down,” Lillie laments.
To make matters worse, Lillie reveals that suing her neighbors wasn’t her original plan. Their first solution was to have the neighbors pay for the trees so they could replant new ones. “They decided to continue to cut into the trees for no good reason and told us to just go ahead and call our lawyers.” And she is!
The Internet Mourns Lillie’s Trees and Recommends Legal Action
Given the circumstances, people in the comment section of Lillie’s TikTok video were very adamant about her seeking a lawyer. One viewer, for example, commented to help her algorithm along by writing, “Commenting bc you’re gonna need money for them lawyer fees.”
Many commenters were quite happy that Lillie might receive some kind of reparations. “Congrats on your generational wealth🔥 tree law is no joke,” one commenter wrote. Another stated, “Tree law is STRICT – enjoy your thousands.”
Other TikTok users offered advice, such as identifying trees and looking for evidence of birds. If it can be proven that birds were nesting in the trees, that means the neighbors would be on the hook for fines, too. “Make sure you get an arborist to identify all the trees that were cut down and approximate ages,” suggested one viewer.
Several commenters were upset that someone would cut so many trees and bushes down just to build an ugly fence. “20 trees???? I cry every time a tree gets cut,” one TikTok user wrote, while another asked, “Who built the fence? Ed, Edd, and Eddy?”
