Missouri Senator Josh Hawley recently asked Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to stop providing Title X funding to Beacon Reproductive Health Network. This sparked a wave of outrage against Hawley, as many Missouri residents criticized the move.

During a recent congressional hearing, Senator Hawley was reported to have accused the nonprofit of being an “abortion provider.” The organization’s executive director, Michelle Trupinano, fired back, calling the senator’s comments misleading and saying he is “out of touch.”

The Beacon Reproductive Health Network is currently the only Title X grantee in Missouri, distributing these funds across 65 health centers in the state and serving over 35,000 patients.

Title X is a federal program established in 1970 that provides funding to public health departments and nonprofit organizations offering family planning and reproductive health services to people with low incomes or limited access to care. However, these funds cannot be used to pay for abortion services.

Residents slammed Senator Hawley on Reddit’s r/Missouri, claiming that this was a broad attack on family planning services. One user said, “Comprehensive sex ed and easy access to birth control are the single most effective ways of reducing the abortion rate. If you ever needed proof that the so-called ‘pro-life’ movement doesn’t actually care about abortion, this is it.”

Others claimed that “the Christian nationalists want young white girls to have more babies, and it doesn’t matter if they finish high school or not.” This led some users to complain that “Christian national types keep trying to force their vision of America on others. This country was founded on religious freedom. They’ve twisted it to think we were founded on Christianity.”

Some folks had strong words for the senator himself, saying, “Imagine voting for this guy to get a six-figure taxpayer-funded salary, who spends all of his time making things harder and worse for the average Missourian.”

This was not the first time the nonprofit has been targeted during the current federal administration, as Trump reportedly froze around $27.5 million in Title X funding in 2025. This may be why people are concerned about repeated actions against this type of organization.
