Unless you have been living under a rock for the past two decades, you have heard of a little feature film called Space Jam. The classic film has long been rumored to be getting a sequel, and we may be about to see the trailer for it soon.
Time for a refresher: Space Jam follows the plight of the Looney Toons. They are discovered by a wealthy alien that plans to sell them into slavery, they will be forced to act out their cartoon misadventures for the rest of time. The toons talk the aliens representatives into playing a game of basketball for their freedom, these guys are tiny and Bugs Bunny and the gang figure they can use this to their advantage. These aliens quickly flip the script and steal the skills(and size) of some of the NBA’s greatest players. Lucky for them Michael Jordan had retired from basketball at the time, and was trying his hand at baseball. Bugs recruits him(unwillingly) and they set off to build a team to win the game and save the Looney Toons.
How could they possibly top that you ask? Well we don’t know exactly, but we DO know who will be stepping into Michael Jordans shoes: Lebron James.
Rumors are circulating that within the next few weeks, a trailer for the sequel will be released by James himself. Insiders are predicting Lebron to leave Cleveland(again), and go free agent. When he decides what team he is going with, he will couple that announcement with the Space Jam 2 trailer.
This is some clever marketing for sure, but it could also directly tie into the movie’s plot. In the original, Michael Jordan’s abilities weren’t stolen by the aliens because he technically wasn’t a basketball player at that moment. If Lebron is a free agent, and technically not attached to any team- maybe that could be the plot device that allows him to play with the Tune Squad this time around.
Players and teams begin negotiating July 1st, expect Lebron’s announcement and the Space Jam 2 trailer sometime not long after that.
