After a report stating that handguns could be mailed through the United States Postal Service if a proposed rule under the Trump administration takes effect, California Representative Mike Levin called out Republicans.

In his post, he asks why “Washington Republicans have no problem trusting USPS to ship handguns in the mail, but they simply can’t be trusted with your mail-in ballot? Make it make sense.” Commenters jumped into the replies to share their opinions on the matter, with many of them condemning him.

So apparently Washington Republicans have no problem trusting USPS to ship handguns in the mail, but they simply can’t be trusted with your mail-in ballot?

According to the post that Levin was replying to, the Department of Justice is considering lifting a ban that Congress passed in 1927 that bars USPS from mailing concealed firearms unless they are from a licensed dealer. The ban was put in place to curb crime, though the Department of Justice has since been attempting to reverse it.

The DOJ has stated that, “the Second Amendment precludes [Congress] from refusing to ship constitutionally protected firearms to and from law-abiding citizens, even if they are not licensed manufacturers or dealers.” Currently, USPS does allow some firearms, including long-barreled rifles, to be mailed, though they must be unloaded and securely packaged.

Democratic attorneys general from various states sent a letter of opposition this week.

Reactions to California Representative Calling Out Republicans

Commenters came into the replies to share their opinion, with many expressing outrage. One person even compared mailing ballots with mailing firearms, writing, “Handguns are personal property and USPS regulations ensure that the right person will receive their property. Votes are not personal property and the USPS has no way of knowing if the actual voter completed the ballot. Sentient beings can grasp these basic differences.“

Various other comments revolved around news articles from various popular outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, that relayed news of unopened ballots or fake voters. Another person even wrote, “So apparently you have no problem with having to provide ID and attest to U.S. citizenship to purchase a firearm, but not to vote.”

An incredibly popular comment that was screenshot and commented various times read, “It’s amazing how much leftist discourse is just them pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible.”

While there were replies that expressed anger towards Levin, others seemed to agree with his position. One user wrote, “At this point if you’re still voting Republican you’ve earned that seat in the clown car.“

As the post continues to gain virality, it is unclear if Representative Mike Levin is among the Democrats who sent a letter of opposition.
