Taxpayer-funded conservative centers are expanding across Florida, and Republicans appear eager to continue supporting their growth. This led to outrage on social media, as many Florida residents were unhappy to see their taxes funding these programs.

According to reports from Prism, initiatives in universities and K-12 schools are using public funds to promote “civics” education while receiving support from the U.S. Department of Education’s America 250 Civics Education Coalition. As examples of grants awarded to conservative centers, Florida lawmakers allocated more than $10 million to the Hamilton School and $15 million to the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom.

At the same time, prominent Republicans such as Ron DeSantis have been targeting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs while also restricting classroom discussions on topics such as gender identity.

Florida Residents React to Conservative Civic Centers in the State

Floridians on Reddit’s r/Florida had harsh words for local Republicans over the initiatives. One user described them as “all gaslighting and brainwashing.” Others argued that “forced patriotism isn’t patriotism.” Some folks even referred to the programs as “taxpayer-funded grooming centers for impressionable students still trying to find their way to be filled to the brim with fear-driven MAGA [expletive].”

Overall, many Florida residents were unhappy with the investments in “civics” education, with some accusing the Republican-led government of engaging in the same behavior it often accuses Democrats of promoting. “Every accusation is a confession. With that in mind, those with kids should be making plans to leave the state in the near future and also join one of your county’s Democratic Clubs to help fight against the conservative agenda today,” one user wrote.

Another user lamented, “All that time and effort to make UF a top public university have gone down the absolute drain these past couple of years. What a clown show. Trying to ruin the only level of education that’s halfway decent in this state.”

As political polarization in the United States continues to grow, initiatives such as these are likely to face criticism from parts of the population. It remains to be seen how these conservative civics centers will affect Florida, however.
