Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently saw his lawsuit against State Representative Gene Wu, related to the Democrats’ quorum break in 2025, rejected by the Texas Supreme Court. The controversial lawsuit was an unprecedented move by a Texas governor, and many residents criticized Abbott online over it.
According to reports from the Austin American-Statesman, Abbott’s filings accused Wu of abandoning his duties as a politician in 2025 by failing to report to the special session called by the governor for the controversial redistricting plan supported by the Republican Party. Abbott accused Wu of abdicating the remainder of his current term by leading the quorum break last year and leaving Texas.
Despite the governor’s efforts, the state Supreme Court rejected Abbott’s request, deciding that the previously imposed fines were sufficient. Representative Wu responded in a recent interview, saying that he paid his fines out of his own pocket and told Abbott: “I really miss having adults in the room in government. Yes, this is politics, but this is serious.”
Texas Residents React to Governor Greg Abbott’s Lawsuit Against Gene Wu
Texas residents had harsh words for Governor Abbott on Reddit’s r/Texas. One of them said, “How about we throw Greg in the garbage and elect someone who actually gives a [expletive] and doesn’t wear their emotions as their entire personality.” Others agreed, claiming that “They’re trying to corrupt the system as much as possible because they know they’re [expletive]. It’s illegal. If it goes through, I expect Americans to riot and take back their state.”
Some people focused on how seemingly hypocritical the whole situation was, saying, “As if Texas Republicans haven’t done the exact same thing.” Some residents doubled down on this: “How dare Wu use the tools available to him to defy Abbott’s order to disenfranchise minorities!”
There were Texas voters who defended the idea of removing the governor as well, saying, “How about we push Texas voters to oust Greg Abbott for leading the destruction of public schools with his voucher scam?” One user made that comment in reference to the controversial voucher system in Texas.
This appears to be the end of Governor Abbott’s lawsuit against Wu, but it is likely that the politicians will continue to criticize each other in the months leading up to the midterms.
