Rockstar Games might’ve kept a tight lid on its biggest launch yet, but fans are slowly getting more clues. The internet believes that the Grand Theft Auto 6 preorder will open as early as next week, following a leaked window from Best Buy. At the same time, fans are hit with a double whammy. A worrying $115 GTA 6 price rumor surfaced online, followed by a report claiming Rockstar may not even hand out traditional review copies before launch.
The preorder pricing drama started when a popular Dutch retailer, Gameshop Twente, reportedly listed GTA 6 Standard Edition for €99 — which converts to roughly $115 USD. But a quick Wayback Machine check shows the retailer has listed that price since at least December, suggesting it’s just a placeholder.
Nevertheless, panic about how much the GTA 6 launch price will be instantly spreads online. On X, fans quickly voiced their concerns. “I’m gonna have to wait for it to go on sale,” wrote @vacas028. “All this hyping up GTA to death is all a front to justify their $100 price tag 😂,” joked @JayDee_717. “If it’s anymore than the current AAA price (£70) then its bad for entire gaming industry,” argued @Dgeneratio.
Adding more fuel to the controversy, a new rumor suggests Rockstar could be taking extreme measures to keep the GTA 6 launch under control. Brazilian outlet Viciados claimed that Rockstar may invite journalists to a private, closed review event instead of sending out advance copies.
“Can I talk about this? I think I can… No one will receive the key to this game,” said journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe during a podcast, translated through Google Translate. He suggested that the studio opt for a private review event instead. According to Viciados, Lippe himself is currently working for the Brazilian media Omelete, which handles the CCXP geek convention and Gamescom LATAM. With that in mind, it’s not surprising if he has insider knowledge.
The idea is simple; no downloadable review codes means fewer chances for spoilers and leaks — or worse, datamining — slipping out early. Private review events are also far from a new concept in the industry. In the early 2000s, publishers often invited media for closed sessions under strict embargoes. Rockstar itself held tightly managed events for GTA 4‘s launch.
As you’d think, though, all of this remains firmly as rumors, as Rockstar has not commented on any of it. What seems more likely is that the GTA 6 preorder trailer will drop soon, especially with Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, next investor meeting fast approaching.
