Republicans in Missouri have introduced 58 anti-LGBT bills so far in 2026, and only one of them has actually become law. The high number of failed anti-LGBT bills did not sit well with Missouri voters, as many felt that local lawmakers were failing to do their jobs properly by proposing useless laws.
New reports from The Advocate state that, of the 58 anti-LGBT bills Republicans introduced in Missouri during 2026, the vast majority went nowhere. Following a national trend, most of the proposals focused on transgender people and DEI policies. Some of the failed bills included bathroom restrictions for transgender people, restrictions on transgender athletes, and other similar measures.
The one anti-LGBT law that passed was a measure affecting the state budget for transgender prisoners, blocking government funds from being used for gender-affirming healthcare, including treatments such as hormone therapy. Even then, the law was only a permanent extension of Missouri’s existing restrictions for incarcerated people.
Missouri Voters Are Not Happy With the GOP’s Failed Anti-LGBT Bills
The trend sparked a fair amount of outrage among Missouri voters. “This is how state Republicans pretend to do their jobs,” one of them wrote on social media. Other voters also expressed dissatisfaction with the situation: “They sure wasted a bunch of time and resources on this, too. Heaven forbid they try to make decent legislation that might help the people of the state or something.”
Others complained about the GOP lawmakers, saying, “Let’s introduce a bill that gives taxpayers a refund when lawmakers waste time for the sake of making a check.” This prompted another person to ask sarcastically, “So you’re saying they should face consequences for not doing their job? I’m all for that and would love to see it, but we know those worthless sociopaths hardly ever face consequences at all.”
Not everyone was quite so pessimistic, however. One user said, “Hope this is a sign that Missouri is progressing.” However, someone else responded, “It’s not. Being targeted by 50 laws that don’t eventually pass is at least as psychologically damaging as being targeted by one that eventually does. Missouri MAGA 200% knows that.”
With trans rights continuing to be a hot debate in the United States and the midterm elections occurring in 2026, it is likely that more anti-LGBT bills may appear in Missouri, but it is still unclear how many of them will ultimately advance.
