A Michigan U.S. House of Representatives candidate named Shelby Campbell has recently gone viral on social media after “twerking for votes” on TikTok. The Michigan candidate has divided opinion, as many consider her to be an unserious candidate, while others, including some young women, have expressed support for her candidacy.
According to Shelby Campbell’s website, she is a 32-year-old single mother, former assembly-line worker, and “working-class woman running for Congress” in Michigan’s 13th district. She identifies as a left-wing candidate, and some of her proposals include fighting for “families under economic pressure.”
What sets Shelby Campbell’s campaign apart from other candidates focused on worker issues, however, is how she presents herself on TikTok, often dancing and using sarcasm to take jabs at right-wing candidates. In a recent interview, she claimed to be “taking advantage of social media,” using provocative posts to gain attention, but defended herself as a real candidate who wants change despite accusations of “twerking for votes.”
Michigan Reacts to Shelby Campbell’s Campaign
Shelby Campbell’s campaign has quickly drawn attention across social media, with opinions sharply divided. In a now-deleted Reddit post on r/Michigan, for example, she came under fire for her behavior: “The world is getting dumber by the day,” one user said.
Another Michigan resident chimed in: “I checked out her website, and I felt like I went down some dumb TikTok/influencer matrix.” Some voters also lamented, “It almost felt like she was trying to be an influencer more than a politician. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to get a competent candidate to run for this seat.”
Not everyone criticized the Michigan politician, though. One Reddit user said, “She’s a law student and has generally decent positions and appears to be taking the responsibility seriously. I am not a fan of the way social media has altered attention and influence either, but the problem doesn’t lie with underdogs trying to use it.”
On her TikTok channel, it is also possible to see hundreds of supportive comments. For example, a woman praised her: “No funny jokes at all, you have inspired me. I’m also a single mother working through college who cares about her community.” Another person said, “Well-behaved women rarely make history.”
It remains to be seen how well Shelby Campbell will do in the race, but she has likely drawn significant attention by leveraging social media in a controversial way.
