Republicans have recently rejected a bill that would have reduced gas taxes while approving legislation that grants tax breaks to gun owners and campers instead. The decision angered many Florida residents, who believed the lawmakers did not have their best interests in mind while drafting the 2026-27 budget.
As reported by Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, a measure pushed by Democrats to cut gas taxes was overwhelmingly rejected by Republican lawmakers during the vote on the $114.5 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Governor Ron DeSantis reportedly said that “the Legislature was less than impressed” with previous gas tax breaks, which is why lawmakers decided not to pursue them again.
At the same time, lawmakers approved tax breaks on other items, introducing a sales tax “holiday” for hunting, fishing, and camping equipment, including ammunition and firearms. The move is expected to save consumers of these products around $32.2 million.
Florida Residents Are Not Happy with GOP Blocking Gas Tax Cut
Floridians expressed their dissatisfaction with the Republican lawmakers’ decision on Reddit’s r/florida. One of them criticized the GOP, saying, “Totally on brand. Congratulations to all of you who voted for this and will continue to do so.”
Others mocked the decision, saying, “Socialism, but for guns and boats. Cool, I bet my republican friends are gonna love that.” Someone else added: “30 years of Republican control of all three branches of government in Florida, not a single thing has gotten better for Floridians.”
Some folks who were unhappy with the decision, however, argued that the issue was more complicated: “Classic Republican. But let’s not kid ourselves, even if the tax cut went through, gas prices would drop for MAYBE a day, maybe 2 if you’re lucky, and then jump back to where it was pre-tax cut.”
A few Floridians even openly defended the budget, arguing that “you will make more on taxes from gas than from guns and outdoor sales. I don’t see a problem here.”
In any case, it is likely that Floridians will continue to face high gas prices while the conflict with Iran continues, as the main reasons behind the price spikes involve factors the Florida government can do little about.
