California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton posted a direct appeal on X to supporters of rival Republican Chad Bianco, warning that continuing to back Bianco could result in two Democrats advancing in the state’s top-two primary. In the message, Hilton stated there is now “no possibility of two Republicans in the top 2” and urged voters to switch to him “to save California.” The post has sparked significant debate online, with some users praising the call for unity while others push back strongly against the request.

A message to every Chad Bianco supporter:

I respect your support for Chad, but there is now no possibility of two Republicans in the top 2.

In fact, there’s a real risk of two Democrats. At this point that’s what a vote for Chad could bring about.

In a direct-to-camera video filmed outdoors with a coastal backdrop, Steve Hilton speaks earnestly to the camera while addressing supporters of his Republican rival. He explains the tight dynamics of the race and stresses the mathematical realities facing Republicans in the primary, stating, “This Is Not Personal, It’s About Saving California.” Hilton gestures occasionally for emphasis as he underscores that the plea focuses on the broader goal for the state.

The message echoes the ongoing dynamics of the California gubernatorial race ahead of the primary, where vote splitting among Republicans is a key concern for some voters.

Mixed Feedback on Hilton’s Appeal to Bianco Backers

Some users supported Hilton’s call for unity. One commenter wrote: “This is an honest appeal. Hopefully, the Bianco supporters hear this… You have to vote for Hilton. Please.” Another shared: “A friend came over today who had been planning on voting for Chad but acknowledged he would vote for Hilton to boost our chances of getting an R on the ballot. I hope more Californians make this decision.”

Others pushed back against the request. One commenter said: “Then please, by all means, YOU drop out. I would rather have someone born and raised in the USA…”

A critical reply stated: “The audacity of you, SpongeBob Steve, asking us to change our vote because there’s no way I would change my vote for somebody that [1: believes in reparations, 2: crowd-funded for Hillary Clinton, 3: says he’s a populist, not a Republican, 4: Says he’s a businessman, but you’ve only been in the country four years,  and you already live in the 2nd most expensive Neighborhood in the Bay Area, Atherton]”

Additional voices suggested collaboration, with one writing: “Call him for a meeting and make a plan. You guys are stronger together than fighting over a few votes. You can both save California from within the governor’s mansion!” Another asked: “What can you offer Chad Bianco and his supporters?”

The exchange underscores the strategic calculations playing out in California’s Republican gubernatorial primary. As the conversation continues online, voters weigh their choices ahead of the top-two primary.
