In an Arizona neighborhood, one homeowner sparked concern among neighbors after putting up a black American flag. While there are plenty of political decorations with well-known meanings, this blackened flag undoubtedly evokes an ominous aura, leaving Reddit user Expensive-Papaya1990 worried about what their neighbor’s trying to say. Posting to r/flags, the Arizonan asked Reddit whether they should be wary of this homeowner, and several hundred chimed in, many of whom were critical of the neighbor.
“I have a personal hatred for all people trying to turn the flag into their own political pet,” remarked one commenter. “It means they’re cringe,” remarked another, referring to the neighbor. “This person could be liberal and thought it looked cool,” pointed out a third.
Expensive-Papaya1990 tuned into the comments themself, adding how the black American flag is supposed to mean “no quarter.” “Like no prisoners and all will be killed? I just don’t get why they would put it up? Like, who are you at war with?” OP questioned. “Anyone flying the no quarter flag who knows what it means is definitely mentally unstable and probably paranoid,” a user wrote in response.
This commenter and others in the post aren’t the only ones who feel as though this No Quarter Flag is a threat to America. The Miami Times posted an article several years ago, claiming that this flag was in the “same family as the Confederate flag” and that it should be “looked upon like a swastika.” Whether people believe this to be true or not might differ by person, but many do feel its purpose is to intimidate.
As one Redditor points out, it “might be a sign of people preparing for that potential civil war that keeps getting floated once in a while,” adding how leftists, especially those who are veterans, began using the flag after Trump won the election. Expensive-Papaya1990 has not reported on whether their Arizona neighbor is a leftist or has any extreme political beliefs. But it would seem the No Quarter Flag isn’t generally seen as a symbol of positivity.
