Republicans Mocked as Live Elephant Mascot Pees in Texas GOP Convention: ‘There You Go MAGAts, Get You Some of That Sweet Trickle-Down!’

You gonna address her or not?

A surprise live elephant appearance at the Texas Republican Party convention quickly turned into social media fodder after the animal urinated on the convention floor in front of delegates, reporters, and party officials. The spectacle has since prompted widespread criticisms against Governor Greg Abbott for animal abuse, among other things.

Governor Abbott closed out his speech at the Texas GOP convention with a live elephant. It then peed on the floor as it left the room.

The elephant, named Paige, was brought into the convention hall at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center shortly after Abbott delivered a keynote speech urging Republicans to unite ahead of the November midterm elections. Draped in a banner reading “Unity Drives Victory” and wearing red, white, and blue decorations, the 9-foot-tall African elephant was introduced as a “larger-than-life surprise” for attendees.

Instead, the moment that dominated online discussion had little to do with party unity. As Paige made her way through the convention hall, she suddenly stopped and released what witnesses described as a massive stream of urine onto the floor near the press section. Video of the incident quickly went viral, where critics and commentators seized on the symbolism. “There you go MAGAts, get you some of that sweet trickle-down,” one viral post joked.

Others compared the scene to an episode of the animated series The Simpsons, which featured an elephant walking through political conventions. Users flooded X with claims that the long-running show had once again “predicted” a real-world event. Paige, who lives at the East Texas Elephant Experience in Cut and Shoot, Texas, weighs nearly 9,000 pounds and usually participates in educational programs around the country.

People online are calling out the animal abuse

Not all reactions were humorous. Several commenters expressed concern about the welfare of the animal, questioning the decision to parade an elephant through a crowded, noisy political gathering. One X user even ranted, “You mock but animal abuse is wildly popular in Texas. If he’s shot it and posed next to the body, he’d have been carried out of the room like a hero.”

Others took pity on the large animal after it was forced to endure the Republican convention, “Poor animal. It’s 2026, can we stop using wild animals for entertainment and keeping them in captivity?” with similar sentiments resulting in a call-to-action: “Abbot and the Texas GOP are a circus, someone save the elephant.”

The Texas Democratic Party was among those mocking the spectacle. In a post accompanying a video of the incident, the party wrote that the elephant’s actions were “the perfect metaphor for the Texas Republican Party.” Despite the backlash, the Texas GOP embraced the viral moment, posting a welcoming message online and thanking Paige for a visit that delegates, critics, and social media users alike are unlikely to forget anytime soon.
