The U.S. Department of Agriculture subpoenaed the California Department of Social Services on June 4 for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program data. Federal officials said the records are needed for a fraud investigation. The subpoena seeks information related to household members receiving benefits between Oct. 1, 2023, and Sept. 30, 2024. The program is known as CalFresh in California.
USDA issued similar subpoenas to Illinois, Michigan and New York. The agency said the states had not provided requested data for more than a year.
USDA’s Office of Inspector General said the reviews are intended to assess data integrity and identify ineligible recipients. The agency said the delay allowed potential fraud to continue unchecked.
California spent more than $12.5 billion on CalFresh during the 2024-25 fiscal year. The program served about 5.5 million residents.
California Department of Social Services spokesperson Jason Montiel said the agency received the subpoena. He said the department is reviewing the request.
California SNAP Data Subpoena Sparks Debate Over Federal Oversight
The subpoena quickly became a point of debate among readers, with many questioning why California was included in the federal action.
One user wrote, “They seem to be obsessed with California. What are they afraid of?” Another stated, “They hate us cuz they ain’t us.”
A separate response argued, “Their focus on a few ineligible people getting benefits is to distract while trump and his cronies steal billions from our government.” Another user added, “But sure let’s direct our rage towards the poor people struggling to feed themselves.”
Not all reactions agreed with that framing. One participant wrote, “They are bing targeted for not complying.” Another argued, “If States get money from the federal government they’re obligated to give the federal government data when the federal government requests the data.”
The dispute now centers on whether the subpoenas represent routine oversight of a federally funded program or an overreach into state-managed benefit records.
