A lot of Texas Republicans are sick and tired of the social media discourse over SNAP in recent weeks. Conservative leaders and local officials are firing back against what they say feels like a coordinated, deceptive disinformation campaign by national Democrats targeting voters in Texas and beyond ahead of the critical upcoming midterm elections.
The backlash has been kicking off in several posts, including a tweet by FactPost and other Democrat news organizations boasting that over 700k children have lost benefits due to President Trump’s SNAP changes. The reports on various social media pages claimed that conservative welfare reforms could completely dismantle the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and “starve” working-class families. Texas Republicans, however, say the narrative is a blatant, calculated lie designed to manufacture panic and manipulate low-income voters at the ballot box.
Democrats have continued to beat the drum about SNAP changes being a disaster for everybody, but as multiple fraud cases mount across the country, it provides a definite uphill challenge for their claims. Texas looks to be a big battleground this Fall, so tensions are on the rise. Here is what some Republicans and Democrats had to say.
“Nothing is more disastrous for a whole nation than worshipping rich people, religious cults, and labor for profit.”
“How do 770,000 illegal aliens have SNAP benefits in the first place?”
“The entire SNAP program is bad. So, any reduction is good.”
“Hungry children in exchange for millionaire tax cuts? Anyone who would do that is evil.”
With Texas positioned as a primary battleground in the upcoming election cycle, conservative groups are urging voters not to fall for elite, out-of-state partisan narratives. As outrage over Democrats’ alleged scare tactics continues to mount, local leaders are launching counter-awareness efforts to expose lies and set the record straight for Texas conservatives.
