Utah Concert Turns Terrifying As Rock Legend Rod Stewart, 81, Grabs An Oxygen Tank And Nearly Collapses Onstage, But His Response Says It All: ‘The Show Must Go On’

Is it time to call it quits?

A Rod Stewart concert in Utah took a frightening turn over the weekend when the 81-year-old rock legend reached for an oxygen tank and appeared to nearly collapse onstage, all in front of a stunned crowd.

The scare unfolded Friday night at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater in West Valley City, just outside Salt Lake City. According to TMZ, which first shared video of the moment, the “Maggie May” singer began looking visibly unwell mid-performance, doubling over and gripping the piano to hold himself upright before the oxygen tank was rushed out. Moments later, a crew member hurried over with an oxygen tank and placed a mask over his face as the crowd broke into supportive applause.

Then Stewart did something that told fans everything.

The Oxygen Tank Scare That Couldn’t Stop Rod Stewart

Rather than cut the night short, the silver-haired icon pulled himself together and leaned into his trademark humor. He told the crowd he had “dang near fainted,” then drew laughs by asking, “Would you mind if I sat down for this one?” Declaring that “the show must go on,” Stewart finished the concert from a chair, still delivering the hits in the raspy voice that has powered his career for more than half a century.

No official medical explanation has been given, but many in the crowd pointed to one factor: altitude. West Valley City sits more than 4,300 feet above sea level, where thinner air can trigger shortness of breath and dizziness, hitting hardest for a performer exerting himself through a long set. It also followed a rough stretch for the star, who had recently been sidelined by laryngitis and canceled a San Diego show the night before on doctors’ advice. Stewart, currently on his farewell-style tour, has famously beaten both thyroid and prostate cancer and long prided himself on staying fit into his eighties.

Fans Are Divided Over Rod Stewart’s Refusal To Quit

Online, the moment split the room. Plenty of fans were moved, saluting the rocker as a “true artist” and “a real trooper” for refusing to walk off, with one noting, “He loves it. The show goes on because he loves it.” Others defended him on the cause, insisting “elevation is no joke at 4,300 feet.“

Not everyone was so admiring. A skeptical camp questioned whether a man of 81 should still be grinding through a demanding tour at all, one quipping that “those touring contracts must be more binding than most,” while others wondered, half-jokingly, if it might finally be time to hang up the microphone.

Representatives for Stewart have not publicly commented. But if his fans were rattled, the rocker himself seemed determined not to be, finishing the gig on his own terms and proving that even a health scare cannot keep one of rock’s great survivors down for long.
