A new analysis is sending shockwaves across Ohio, warning that President Donald Trump’s signature spending law could cost the state more than 51,000 jobs and slash billions from its economy within the next few years.
The report, published by the Commonwealth Fund, projects that Ohio will lose roughly 51,200 jobs by 2029 as cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs take effect. The analysis also estimates the state will lose about $4.4 billion in federal funding, reducing Ohio’s gross domestic product by approximately $5.4 billion and cutting state and local tax revenue by hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to the report, the losses stem from more than $900 billion in Medicaid reductions and $187 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program over the next decade. The analysis also points to the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which led many Ohio residents to face sharply higher insurance premiums.
The findings quickly sparked heated debate online, with members of Ohio’s Reddit community blasting elected officials and warning of long-term consequences for workers, families, and local economies.
One commenter who said they traveled to Washington during debate over the legislation claimed they warned lawmakers about the potential impact.
“I told them both that the big beautiful bill was going to hurt Ohio. It was going to be a net loss for the entire state,” the user wrote.
Others expressed frustration that the projected economic fallout had not received more attention before the legislation became law.
“It’s sad you could see it coming from a mile away too,” another Reddit user commented.
Online Backlash Targets Ohio Leaders
Many commenters directed their anger at Ohio’s Republican leadership, arguing that party loyalty was placed ahead of state interests.
One Reddit user summed up that frustration in a widely upvoted comment, writing: “They don’t understand Trump and MAGA hate the poor whites as much as anyone else. They’re cutting all social safety nets and stealing our tax dollars!”
The Commonwealth Fund report argues that the cuts will have effects far beyond individual benefit recipients. Researchers estimate nearly one million jobs could disappear nationwide as Medicaid funding declines, with healthcare positions accounting for roughly half of those losses.
The report also challenges claims that stricter work requirements will increase employment, arguing that evidence from previous programs shows limited success in boosting workforce participation.
Some Ohio residents on Reddit said the projections reinforced concerns about the state’s future.
“As a young professional trying to get a solid career going, I’m quickly losing all faith in Ohio,” one commenter wrote.
Others mocked what they viewed as partisan attempts to shift blame.
“Obviously it’s the Democrats’ fault. Duh,” one user joked sarcastically.
Whether the projections ultimately prove accurate remains to be seen. But the report has already ignited fierce debate across Ohio, with supporters of the analysis warning of economic pain ahead and critics questioning whether voters and lawmakers fully understood the potential consequences of the legislation.
