On Thursday, Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for thousands of Haitian and Syrian migrants. The congresswoman accused the court of doing the president’s “bidding” and warned that the ruling puts vulnerable communities at risk.
Ramirez shared her thoughts on the ruling in a video posted on X from outside the Supreme Court, where she said she was attending a rally with other lawmakers and advocacy groups.
“The Supreme Court just decided that Donald Trump and [Stephen] Miller have the authority to be able to end TPS for Haiti, for Syria,” Ramirez said. “People who are coming to the border after months of crossing borders, jungles, seeking refuge, will no longer be able to seek refuge in this country.”
She continued, “Look, for anyone that is excited about celebrating 250 years of this country. I want you to ask yourselves, what country are we becoming? What country are we in this precise moment that we’re willing to deny people seeking asylum the ability to find a place of sanctuary?”
Ramirez said that the conditions that originally led many Haitians and Syrians to seek protection in the United States have not improved. She urged Congress to pass the Dream and Promise Act, which would create a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and TPS holders.
“It is important for us to continue to speak up and yes, to call out that sellout Supreme Court that cares more about doing whatever Donald Trump wants them to do than to uphold the moral authority of the legal system for this country,” the congresswoman stated.
Netizens Push Back Against Ramirez’s Comments
Many people reacting to the video left comments disagreeing with the Illinois congresswoman’s criticism of the court’s ruling.
“Too many criminal and irresponsible illegal aliens were allowed over the border. They need to be deported,” one person wrote. Another commented, “We do need to protect our communities and country and that has to be for citizens. TPS starts with TEMPORARY! Asylum seekers should follow asylum rules.”
Some argued that individuals under TPS and DACA programs already have legal options available to them. “Anybody here under TPS or DACA can apply for a permanent VISA & a path to citizenship. If they don’t & the programs expire, they are subject to deportation,” one X user stated.
Others defended the Supreme Court and accused Democrats of prioritizing noncitizens over Americans. “The Supreme Court is upholding our constitution & rights. Dems want us to turn all rights over to illegals & foreigners who have no vested interests in this country or its ppl,” one netizen remarked. Another critic said, “Your [sic] a sell out to the American citizens..illegal aliens don’t belong here..do it the right way or don’t come ..pretty simple.”
Someone else questioned Ramirez’s understanding of the issue, writing, “You aren’t qualified to be a Congresswoman because you don’t understand what the word ‘temporary’ means.”
According to The Associated Press, the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision allows the Trump administration to move forward with ending TPS protections for roughly 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians after lower courts had temporarily blocked the policy. The ruling could eventually result in the loss of work authorization and deportation protections for many affected migrants.
