In a recent X post, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani celebrates the New York Knicks’ championship win. The team, whose full name is the New York Knickerbockers, has been in the media lately for their championship win, ending their 53-year championship drought.

However, while the post celebrates the team and the cultural win for the city, others believe that Mamdani is using the championship as part of his campaign strategy. In fact, some commenters accuse him of being a fake Knicks fan, exploiting the team’s logo for his own gain.

The video in question was posted to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s public X page, which he uses frequently to let followers know about current events in the city. The two-minute video begins with clips of city workers who were responsible for building stages and seating areas for the Knicks celebration event.

The celebration included a parade float with the Knicks players standing atop it, accompanied by Mamdani. As a result of this particular inclusion, some viewers in the comments believe that he is using the Knicks’ win for his personal gain as a politician.

One commenter wrote, “Why did you use the Knicks championship to promote DSA politicians? Seems like you used the Knicks and their logo without consent and even used the team as slaves without them co denting to promote the DSA. You received cease and desist to stop this yet you continue to abuse them.”

The cease and desist being referred to here comes from another X post from October 2025, citing that the New York Knicks sent Mamdani a cease and desist letter over the use of their logo. Allegedly, the team wrote in a statement, “The Knicks want to make it clear that we do not endorse Mr. Mamdani for Mayor…We will pursue all legal remedies to enforce our rights.”

Comments and Reactions Towards Mamdani’s Knicks Post

Various other commenters felt the same as the above, with a different comment reading, “Dude you won’t shut up about the Knicks already the Yankees won 4 World Series titles under Giuliani.”

Similarly, another person wrote, “This won’t be the last time this year nor until your term as NYC Mayor ends for you to try to milk the glory for your administration just because the 2026 NY Knicks were NBA Champions.“

However, there were other comments that were less critical of Mamdani’s video post, with two commenters writing, “That is beautiful man. Congrats again to the Knicks for an amazing season. You did your city proud,” and “You bring so much joy to the country Mayor!! Come see us in Arizona sometime!! 🥰.”

Whether Mayor Mamdani’s video was simply a celebration of a historic moment in New York sports or an attempt to score political points appears the largely depends on who is watching. Right now, the video continues to gain more comments in the replies below.
