‘They’re Going to Give Away a Seat in Michigan’: Voters Skeptical After AOC Endorses Al-Sayed

What do you think?

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently endorsed Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed for the U.S. Senate. The endorsement divided people online, with many expressing differing views on whether it was the right move for Michigan.

We are proud to endorse Abdul El-Sayed to be Michigan’s next senator.

Abdul is building a winning coalition by putting forward an agenda that speaks directly to working people.

The endorsement came during an interview with The New York Times and was described as one of AOC’s most “assertive moves” of 2026 so far. The decision reportedly puts the congresswoman in direct opposition to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, who previously backed El-Sayed’s Democratic opponent, Haley Stevens.

Stevens is reportedly viewed as the more electable candidate because of her more moderate political positions, while El-Sayed is seen as more closely aligned with the party’s progressive wing. During the interview, AOC said that, ideological differences aside, members of the Democratic Party see the current political moment as “existential” and believe that El-Sayed could energize progressive voters while still winning the election.

Voters Aren’t Unanimous on AOC’s Endorsement of El-Sayed

Opinions on whether the endorsement was a good idea varied online. On X, many users seemed skeptical, if not openly hostile, toward AOC’s endorsement of El-Sayed. One of them wrote: “They’re going to give away a seat in Michigan. I wonder if that will wake up the ‘moderate’ Dems.”

Another person said: “Do people really think that an AOC endorsement is gonna help him win in Michigan of all places? Y’all might as well forget this crucial seat if he’s the nominee.”

However, reactions on Reddit were much more positive than those on X. According to one user: “Stevens knows she isn’t going to win the primary. Is resorting to dog whistle Islamophobia claiming Abdul can’t win the general.” Someone else claimed that “This should peel off a lot of undecided voters.”

One Michigan resident wrote: “Exactly 8 years to the day that she endorsed him for Governor in 2018! I knew it was coming; she has been strategically timing her endorsements for the greatest effect. Ballots went out last week (I already sent mine in for Abdul), and early voting starts in 3 weeks. He really does have all the momentum right now.”

With Democrats divided over the race, it remains to be seen whether Abdul El-Sayed or Haley Stevens will become the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. In any case, AOC’s endorsement is expected to influence the primary.
