Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) stated on July 4th that the United States owes everything to Black women for contributions including inventions and democracy. A video clip of the remarks shared on the platform X has prompted strong reactions online. According to comments on the post, many users questioned the claim and pushed back with historical counterpoints.

The video clip posted on X shows Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett speaking at an event with a Global Black Economic Forum backdrop. In the footage, she addresses the audience on July 4th and says, “This 4th of July I say, celebrate a black woman that that you know because whether it is an invention that she made or whether is the very democracy that still hangs by a thread right now there’s a black woman to thank for her contributions when it comes to answering the question of what American owes black women, the answer is everything when we think about the sacrifices that that the black woman have made from the moment that we were stolen from our homelands and transported into this country.”

Additional comments challenged the claim directly, including “Name one thing black women invented that justifies us owing them ‘everything’.”

Further reactions highlighted different historical perspectives. One user asked, “How many black women laid down their lives for the freedom of their own people? Asking for 360,000 northern white men.” 

Another wrote, “She’ll never admit how people from Africa ended up as slaves. They were sold to EVERYONE by other Africans.”
