With the Fallout series riding high thanks to Amazon’s hit TV adaptation, there’s one rumour that simply refuses to die. Ever since a mention of the Fallout 3 Remake appeared in a leaked court document, Brotherhood of Steel fans have clung to hope for years. Now, industry veteran Jeff Gerstmann has added even more fuel to the fire, claiming he’s actually seen footage of the anticipated project.
During The Jeff Gerstmann Show 213: It’s Grim Up North, Gerstmann discussed the recent XBOX layoff and chose to focus on what it says about Bethesda. He speculated that XBOX might be leaning hard on its ‘strongest franchises’ and ‘quadrupling down’ on the next Elder Scrolls, while pushing for more Fallout projects. One of them could be the long-rumored remake of the studio’s classic Fallout 3.
“I have seen footage of a Fallout 3 Remake, so […] someone somewhere made something. Um, so, you know, hey, we’ll see,” he remarked casually during the podcast, even though he isn’t typically known for leaking games. However, Gerstmann also suggested that Bethesda might not be the one directly handling the remake.

The studio, he explained, had been prioritizing Starfield and simply didn’t have the resources to spare for a Fallout project. He called it ‘a huge missed opportunity,’ especially since the franchise has grown even bigger thanks to Amazon’s live-action adaptation. Gerstmann isn’t even sure if the project is still cooking in the studio’s kitchen.
“Maybe Bethesda would not do a Fallout remake themselves. In fact, someone else has put in quite a lot of work into a Fallout 3 Remake that has yet to officially materialize,” he continued. “And I don’t even know if that game is, I assume, that is still happening, but maybe it is dead. Who can say?”
Still, Gerstmann’s comment about the game being in progress somewhat lines up with Microsoft’s Activision acquisition FTC trial in 2023. A leaked document listed that a Fallout 3 Remaster project was planned for a 2024 release window. However, as seen with the Oblivion Remastered launch, Bethesda’s roadmap seems to have been delayed by 3 years. With that in mind, if the Fallout 3 Remake followed a similar path, a 2027 release might make sense.
However, McFarlane Toys has added more fuel to the theory that the game could be released sooner rather than later. Earlier this year, the toy manufacturer listed a ‘FALLOUT 3 REMASTERED – #13 T-45B NUKA COLA’ figure as scheduled to launch on August 31, 2026. Merch listings often precede — or even coincide with — game launches, so, unsurprisingly, some saw this as a signal for a 2026 announcement or even a shadow drop.
There are also rumors that the project keeps the iconic VATS but uses the more fluid Fallout 4 gameplay with a toggleable green filter. For now, Bethesda remains silent — although Bloomberg recently hinted that The Elder Scrolls 6 could be released in the next 2-3 years. Dropping a Fallout 3 Remake between Starfield and its next big game, though, should keep its fans happy.
