James Franco has sparked a new wave of skepticism online after finally releasing the mysterious “alien footage” in his California home, which he spent weeks teasing on TikTok, with many viewers dismissing the clips as an elaborate stunt and joking that the supposed extraterrestrial looked more like one of his famous Hollywood friends.
The 48-year-old actor returned to social media in early June with a new TikTok account, insisting that he was not using artificial intelligence or promoting a project. Instead, Franco claimed that something unusual had happened at his California home and urged followers to stay tuned over the course of the next few weeks. Come July 13, Franco posted grainy black-and-white footage that appeared to show an alien-like figure wandering around his property, approaching windows, and moving near his garage.
Rather than convincing viewers, however, the video fueled even more disbelief. The alien in the footage is something many assumed to be a mere man in a costume. Social media users quickly flooded the comments with jokes and criticism, with many arguing that the footage looked staged. One user quipped, “Plot twist it’s Seth Rogan,” referencing Franco’s longtime friend and frequent collaborator Seth Rogen. Another wrote, “Clearly fake but I’ll say it again, I’m excited for whatever movie this is for.”
Others pointed out that Franco is a professional actor, questioning whether the month-long mystery was simply viral marketing for an upcoming film. One commenter asked, “Is this for a movie or is this legit footage?” while another threatened to unfollow if the reveal turned out to be a publicity stunt. At the time of writing, Franco hasn’t addressed these concerns and criticisms.
People online are over-analyzing the footage
Some eagle-eyed viewers also claimed the footage appeared digitally edited, alleging the alien image had been superimposed over the video. The speculation intensified after fans noticed Franco’s TikTok account follows only two profiles: the official account for his upcoming film Love Meets in the Sunshine and its director, Christian Guiton. Guiton has previously denied that the bizarre TikTok campaign is connected to the movie, saying it is neither science fiction nor a conspiracy-themed film.
Franco has since teased that “a lot more footage” is on the way, leaving fans wondering whether the bizarre saga is an elaborate troll, an unconventional promotional campaign, or something else entirely. For now, most viewers remain unconvinced that an alien ever visited the actor’s California home.
Franco’s last movie projects notably dated back to 2019, and he has since fallen out of the Hollywood spotlight. His career declined because of a combination of sexual misconduct allegations, legal settlements, and the resulting loss of industry support. Even former friends such as the aforementioned Seth Rogen said they were no longer close and that he had no plans to work with Franco again.
