In a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing, University of California, San Francisco Chancellor Sam Hawgood testified under oath that the vast majority of pregnancies occur in women. When questioned about whether a non-biological woman has ever had a baby, he responded that a transgender person can and reiterated that the school provides care for transgender patients. The exchange, shared in a viral X post from San Francisco, has drawn widespread online attention and reactions.
The video clip was posted on X by user @JennPellegrino. It shows footage from a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing examining the impact of DEI policies on medical schools.
The footage shows Dr. Sam Hawgood, identified on screen as the UCSF Chancellor in California, seated at the witness table. He states: “Of course, the vast majority of pregnancies are in women, and I have absolutely no problem with using the word ‘pregnant women.’” He adds that he uses the term himself.
The clip also shows Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) questioning him from the dais, asking whether “a non-biological woman ever had a baby,” to which Hawgood replies: “A transgender person can.” He further states: “I would reiterate, we take care of transgender patients.”
The short video focuses on this portion of the exchange during the committee’s discussion of medical school curricula and does not include what was said before or after these specific remarks.
UCSF Leader’s Testimony Draws Sharp Scrutiny
Some commenters questioned the chancellor’s statements and fitness for his role. One user wrote: “He’s unfit. He is mentally unwell.” Another described the appearance as: “This is one creepy, weird dude. Whoa!! ”
Other responses focused on the substance of the testimony. One commenter stated that Hawgood would have to be “a pretty shameless and corrupt” person “to lie so blatantly about something as self-evident as birthing.”
Another wrote: “Totally insane, they should revoke this Physician’s License, if he is even a Physician?”
Additional comments called for accountability, with one user noting: “He should resign immediately. This is so [expletive] insane.”
Some viewers expressed broader frustration with the exchange and the institution involved. One commenter wrote that Hawgood “would have to be pretty shameless and corrupt to lie so blatantly about something as self-evident as birthing.” Another called him a “trans industry sellout” and urged him to “apologize to the public and act more worthy of your medical license.”
The exchange is now part of a broader national discussion on DEI policies and terminology in medical education. The clip continues to circulate as institutions and lawmakers debate how best to address diverse patient needs while maintaining scientific clarity.
