A California parent posted on TikTok about being told a doctor’s office would restrict access to their 11-year-old’s medical records after age 12 unless the child consents. The clip, which references Gov. Gavin Newsom, has sparked widespread online discussion on parental rights.

A TikTok video shows a California parent describing a call with a doctor’s office in which staff stated that access to their 11-year-old child’s medical records would be restricted after the child turns 12 unless the minor consents. The post attributes the policy to California law and criticizes Gov. Gavin Newsom in the context of his national political profile. The clip has drawn widespread online attention amid divided reactions over parental rights and minor medical privacy.

The video was originally posted on TikTok by user @monamoonwhiskey. According to the post text accompanying the video: “California Just Banned Parents From Accessing Their Kids’ Medical Records After Age 12 Unless the Child Says Yes.”

The woman in the video states: “On the phone with my 11-year-old’s doctor’s office… and they basically told me I’m no longer allowed to know what’s going on with my child. I don’t even agree with it. This is insane. This is dangerous. This is California under Gavin Newsom, and now he wants to bring it to the entire country.”

The footage does not show the actual doctor’s office, a verified recording of the full call, or independent confirmation of the specific exchange described; it presents the poster’s account and links the situation to California policy and Newsom.

California Parents Weigh In on Medical Record Access

Some users focused on legal and maturity concerns, with one writing: “This should be challenged and go to the Supreme Court. It is about being an adult and whether you are capable of making life-altering decisions. You can’t vote, drink or smoke but can make medical decisions???”

Another pointed out inconsistencies in parental liability obligations, questioning “whether limitations on access will similarly strip parents of their legal obligations for children’s misdeeds until the age of 18, for instance financial obligations for offenses or health-related expenses.”

Many others voiced broader opposition to the policy and criticism of California leadership, including statements such as “Government controlling your children !!! Stop this insanity!!!,” “He is destroying families,” “Newsom wants your children,” and comments describing Democrats in the state as believing “a child that’s 12 has rights above their parents.”

Additional replies called for addressing elections, with one stating: “California needs to get the rigged elections under control and get some decent people in there so they can fix their state! They’re stealing everything you own, including your children! How far are you gonna let them go?” and labeled the situation as government overreach.

The clip has become part of a broader online discussion about parental access to minors’ medical records under California law. It continues to fuel exchanges on the balance between teen privacy and family oversight in the state.
