Texas State Representative James Talarico visited the Rio Grande Valley to support Cindy Banda, a mother of six undergoing cancer treatment with thousands of dollars in medical bills, according to a post on X. Talarico wrote that no one should have to crowdfund cancer care and said he would fight to lower healthcare costs for everyone because healthcare is a human right. The post has drawn strong public reactions online.

No one should have to crowdfund their cancer treatment.

The video shows Texas State Representative James Talarico speaking directly to the camera outdoors and stating: “No one should have to crowdfund their cancer treatment”. My team and I are in the Rio Grande Valley supporting Cindy Banda, a mother of six fighting breast cancer. She’s facing tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills that she can’t afford. She has insurance, but it’s not enough. Like so many Texans, Cindy is scraping by to pay her bills, selling meals at the side of the road to afford her treatment.

Today, neighbors are showing up to help because that’s what Texans do. Cindy’s story shouldn’t be like this, but after the big ugly bill cut more than a trillion dollars from healthcare programs to fund tax cuts for the wealthy, things are only going to get worse. In the Senate, “I would fight to lower healthcare costs for everyone because healthcare is a human right.”

The footage shows the interaction at the outdoor gathering and food service but does not show details of the medical bills, treatment, or what occurred before or after the recorded moments.

Reactions to Talarico’s Healthcare Comments in the Rio Grande Valley

Some users questioned the logic of opposing individual crowdfunding while supporting broader taxpayer funding, with one commenter writing, “When you say no one should crowdsource a cancer case and then say taxpayers should fund, that’s—sourcing the money from a crowd. It’s just a crowd that didn’t agree to it. Why is it wrong to source from people who consent but not to people who don’t?”

Others directly challenged Talarico on personal responsibility, including the comment “Are you gonna pay for her cancer treatment? Put your money where your mouth is.”

Additional replies described the position as a “communist lie” or stated that “Free healthcare paid for by taxpayers is not a human right.”

A smaller number of comments expressed support for expanding access, with one noting that universal healthcare means “everyone pays something according to their means, but everyone is treated according to the needs” and asking why the idea remains controversial in the U.S.

The clip has become part of a broader online conversation about healthcare costs and access in Texas. Talarico’s comments come as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat.
