Vivek Ramaswamy tried to brand Amy Acton a liar over her account of COVID-19 mortality in 2020. Instead, the Republican candidate walked straight into a storm of hospital data and furious Ohio voters who say they are tired of political attacks that ignore the facts.
Ramaswamy’s campaign accused Acton, the Democratic nominee for Ohio governor, of “spewing lies” after she said mortality among the sickest COVID patients was roughly 50 percent early in the pandemic before falling to about 5 percent by June.
The numbers require context, but they are not fiction. Early studies published in JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine found death rates near or above 50 percent among critically ill intensive-care patients in Washington State. Separate hospital data later showed mortality among all hospitalized COVID patients dropping below 5 percent by June 2020.
Acton compressed two patient groups into one dramatic comparison, but both figures were rooted in documented medical evidence.
That distinction did little to calm the reaction on Reddit’s Ohio forum, where users overwhelmingly turned their anger toward Ramaswamy and the Republican Party.
“Vivek won’t care about facts. He should be ignored,” one of the thread’s most popular comments declared.
Another user warned that the problem extended beyond the candidate himself: “The people who’ll vote for him don’t care either, and that’s the biggest election hurdle.”
Ohio Redditors Unload on Ramaswamy
The thread quickly became a referendum on Ramaswamy’s credibility, political style and relationship with Ohio.
One commenter called him “a grifter before anything else,” while another urged voters, “Come on Ohio, don’t let this grifter get in power.”
Others saw the dispute as part of a broader Republican strategy of attacking experts while counting on voters never hearing the full explanation.
“Republicans hate evidence,” one Ohio commenter wrote.
Another said the controversy “reeks of ‘It was just a cold,’” adding that anyone working inside a hospital during 2020 understood how dangerous the virus had become.
A commenter who identified themselves as working in Ohio’s coroner system pointed to the sharp rise in total deaths during 2020 as evidence that the pandemic’s toll could not simply be dismissed as paperwork or political manipulation.
The backlash also revived questions about Ramaswamy’s own pandemic record. Acton’s campaign noted that he advised Ohio officials during the crisis and supported aggressive measures, including testing and isolation proposals.
That history has given critics fresh ammunition as Ramaswamy attempts to make Acton’s pandemic leadership a central campaign issue.
For many Reddit users, the episode was a warning about a political culture they believe rewards outrage over accuracy. Indeed, one comment captured a mood seemingly felt across the entire thread: “Vivek just spews lies.”
Clearly, the hospital record is more complicated than either campaign slogan, but the online verdict was not.
