Georgia Republicans Under Fire for ‘Enabling’ Data Center Boom: ‘Every Republican in this state is suspect’

When will this end?

Opposition to the data center boom currently taking place in Georgia has been growing lately, and one resident’s post about the issues has sparked discussion about who is responsible. Many Georgia residents argued that the Republican Party is to blame for the boom, which is seen in a bad light by many locals, who accuse it of harming rural communities and increasing the overall price of energy.

The discussion began after a user posted on Reddit’s r/Georgia, accusing both the GOP and the company Georgia Power of not acting in the interests of locals. They argued that the Georgia Public Service Commission’s (PSC) consumer protection guidelines for data centers are ineffective because they give Georgia Power too much discretion to shift utility costs to consumers.

The Georgia resident also criticized the GOP lawmakers for failing to pass legislation that would regulate data center construction, citing local politicians such as Sen. Matt Brass, Sen. Greg Dolezal, and Rep. Don Parsons as part of the problem. The author also framed the elections in the Georgia Public Service Commission as a major moment for residents to support candidates who oppose widespread data centers.

Georgia Residents Comment on Data Center Boom

Multiple Georgia residents agreed with the points raised by the post’s author. One of them said: “Republicans are easily corrupted. Every Republican in this state is suspect. They honestly (GOP reps/voters) don’t care about anyone other than themselves. And if it doesn’t affect them personally, they can’t be bothered.”

Some folks noted that “Georgia Power is owned and operated by people living in Texas trying to maximize shareholder value for a publicly traded company by exploiting our state halfway across the country,” arguing that the company has little incentive to improve the lives of local residents.

Others also criticized the Democrats: “Dem politicians need to be on the offensive, blasting republicans any chance they get over this is the solution. They are pathetically silent, so nothing will change.”

Some people, however, believed that the whole discussion was being exaggerated: “Data centers have been a growth area my entire career, so 30+ years. Companies always need compute power, and they need more and more each day. I’ve watched public data centers grow for the last 25 years.”

It remains to be seen how the debate over data centers will unfold in Georgia, but opposition to their expansion has been growing across the state and in other parts of the country.
