The mood “became tense” after a reporter asked about the politician owning 15 real estate properties in six states while earning an annual salary of $153,000. Reporters also questioned allegations that Paxton voted in multiple elections using an address where critics say he does not reside. Paxton did not respond to those questions during the press conference.
Paxton declined to answer the questions and was later accused of “fleeing from the press” by Texas Democratic Party spokesperson Ryan Martin. Martin called him “a coward who runs from reporters because he can’t defend his record.”
