California Trust War Explodes as Gayle King Discovers the Grieving Widow She Just Interviewed Was Quietly Suing Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Own Mother: ‘Her Answer Was Telling’

Nobody at CBS saw it coming

A California courthouse now holds a petition that Gayle King had no idea was coming when she sat down with Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow.

Tenisha Warner, 48, gave her first interview since her husband’s death to CBS Mornings, in a conversation recorded ahead of the one-year anniversary of the actor’s accidental drowning. Warner died on July 20, 2025, at 54, caught in the water during a family vacation in Costa Rica.

She spent most of the interview on grief. Asked to describe that day, she said it is one she cannot fully retrieve.

“I can’t remember the details,” she told King. “I think my body went through shock.“

She called it “the worst day of my life” and said it “feels unfair.” What she does remember is the calculation that followed. “All I could think about was my daughter and what I needed to do to continue to be her mother and be her only parent,” she said.

Tenisha stayed private in the immediate aftermath, then began speaking publicly about her grief last September, saying she had come to understand how far her husband’s work had reached. “I realized that there was a world out there that he had touched in such powerful ways,” she said.

Then King asked whether she and her mother-in-law, Pamela Warner, still speak.

Tenisha did not answer directly. “Right now, everybody, like all of his family members and, who have lost him, they are grieving,” she said. “You know, it’s been the biggest loss for all of us.” She went on to describe her emotional capacity as limited, and said her daughter receives whatever she has to give, with herself second.

Days later, the reason that answer landed the way it did became public.

On Monday, one year to the day after her husband drowned, Tenisha filed suit against Pamela Warner in her capacity as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust. CBS Mornings had recorded the interview before any of it was known, and King said neither she nor her team had any idea.

“I thought her answer was telling,” King said afterward.

Viewers Were Moved, Then the Timing Questions Started

The response to the interview itself was almost entirely tender. “She mourned with dignity and grace, deep respect,” one viewer wrote, while another simply said, “I can see the pain and grief within her face.“

Plenty credited the interviewer too. “Gayle showed so much sensitivity and compassion in this interview,” one wrote. “The best thing you can do for someone who has been through trauma is to let them decide what to share.“

One comment cut deeper than the rest: “I just hate that out of all the years he’s been happily married, this is how the public is introduced to her.“

The lawsuit is where the room divided. “I don’t get why she chose the Anniversary of his death to sue his Mother,” one viewer objected. Others pointed to the calendar as the explanation rather than the offense: “And she had to file it because of the timing… 365 days after the passing of the deceased – she had to file – especially if his estate is in probate.“

Most landed somewhere in the middle, hoping the two women find their way back to each other. As one put it: “I pray that whatever is happening with his mom that they come together as family.“

One interview about grief. One lawsuit nobody at the network saw coming.
